Getting your garage back
Garages fill up gradually. A few boxes after a move, a bike nobody rides, tins of paint from a decorating job long ago, and before long there's no room for the car. Sheds and outbuildings tend to go the same way.
A garage clearance is useful when you want to use the space again, perhaps for parking, a workshop, a home gym or a utility area, when you're selling the house, or when a relative's home is being cleared and the garage is the last part left.
What's usually involved
A quick look first
Send us photos of the garage or shed, or we can usually visit to give a free, no-obligation quote. Let us know what you'd like to keep, and whether there's anything heavy such as a workbench, chest freezer or old machinery.
Sorting as we clear
We bring everything out and sort it as we go. Garages often hold a lot of metal, from old bikes and tools to shelving and car parts, and much of that can be recycled. Tools and garden equipment in working order are often useful to someone else, so we pass them on where we can. Anything else goes to licensed facilities.
A clear, swept floor
Once the space is empty, we sweep it out so you can see what you're working with, whether you're planning new storage or simply want to park the car again.
Items that need extra care
Garages and sheds are where a lot of awkward items end up, so it helps to know what to expect:
- Lawnmowers and petrol tools: please drain the fuel before collection if you can, or let us know they still have petrol in them.
- Paint, oil and chemicals: we don't take hazardous liquids such as solvents, pesticides or engine oil. Some can go to a household waste recycling centre, and North Yorkshire Council can advise on what its sites accept.
- Car batteries and tyres: these have to be recycled separately, so mention them when you ask for a quote.
- Old fridges and freezers: these often end up in garages and need special handling, so please tell us about them.
- Asbestos: some older garages have roofs or wall panels made from asbestos cement. We don't handle asbestos and would advise speaking to a specialist if you're unsure.
Before we arrive
- Take out anything you want to keep, or group it at the back of the garage and tell us.
- Check boxes for paperwork, photographs or keepsakes that may have been stored and forgotten.
- Make sure we can get to the garage door, and let us know if it's an up-and-over door that sticks.
- If the garage is in a separate block, tell us which one it is and where we can park.
Clearing more than the garage?
Garages are often part of a bigger job. If the loft is in a similar state, a loft clear-out can be done on the same visit. For bags and bulky waste from elsewhere around the home, see our rubbish removal page, and if you're emptying the whole property, our house clearance service can take in garages, sheds and outbuildings too.
Garage clearances across Northallerton and nearby
We clear garages and sheds throughout Northallerton and the surrounding towns and villages, including Bedale, Stokesley, Richmond, Thirsk and its nearby villages and down towards Easingwold. From a single shed at the bottom of the garden to a row of farm outbuildings, tell us what you've got and we'll give you a free, no-obligation quote.
