House clearance in a hillside town
Richmond is one of the most striking towns in North Yorkshire. Its Norman castle stands high above the River Swale, the cobbled Market Place is one of the largest in England, and streets of fine Georgian houses climb the slopes around it. It is also the gateway to Swaledale. All of that makes Richmond a wonderful place to live, and a town where clearing a house needs proper planning.
We cover Richmond and the villages around it from our base in Northallerton. Every clearance starts with a free, no-obligation quote, and access is one of the first things we look at.
Steep streets, cobbles and long carries
Many Richmond homes cannot be reached by parking right outside. Steep streets, narrow wynds, steps up to front doors and uneven cobbles all mean furniture has to be carried further and handled more carefully than usual.
On and around the Market Place
Plenty of properties around the Market Place are flats above shops or homes with shared entrances. The traditional market takes over on Saturdays, so we usually suggest a weekday for loading here. We agree where the van can stop and keep pavements clear for shoppers and neighbours.
Georgian town houses
Frenchgate and the older streets near it are known for their Georgian architecture. These tall houses often have cellars, attics, elegant staircases and original features. We protect banisters, door frames and floors as we go, and we take apart larger pieces where that is the safest way out.
Homes on the slopes
Away from the old centre, newer houses and estates sit on the higher ground around the town. They tend to be easier to reach, though steps and sloping drives can still add to the carrying, and garages and lofts are often full.
How we plan for awkward access
When we look round a Richmond property, we walk the route from the front door to the nearest safe place for the van, and we note any steps, tight turns, low ceilings or shared passages. That tells us how many people the job needs and how long it is likely to take, so the quote is realistic from the start. Where a sofa or wardrobe cannot come out in one piece, we take it apart carefully rather than force it, which protects both the item and the house. If the street is very narrow, we keep van stops short and load in small batches so that traffic and neighbours can still get by.
Common reasons for a Richmond clearance
- Settling an estate. Our probate clearance team works with executors and solicitors, keeping documents and valuables safe.
- Between tenancies. Landlords and agents use our tenancy clearance service to get flats and houses ready to let again.
- Closing or moving a business. We provide commercial clearances for shops, offices, cafés and storerooms.
- Too much stuff, not enough space. For a cluttered spare room, cellar or garden, our household rubbish removal is a simpler option.
Swaledale and the villages
Beyond the town, farmland and moorland open up along the dale, with stone farmhouses, barns and cottages set along narrow lanes. We cover villages such as Easby, Skeeby and Gilling West to the east and north, and Hudswell and Marske further up the Swale. We plan these jobs with the road, the weather and any farm tracks in mind, and we look at barns, stores and outbuildings at the same time as the house so nothing is missed from the quote. Further afield, we also have pages for Leyburn and its surrounding villages and for Catterick Garrison and Catterick village.
What to expect on the day
We arrive at the agreed time and walk through the property with you or your key holder to confirm what is staying. Then we work room by room, keeping aside anything you have asked us to find, such as paperwork, photos or jewellery. If we come across something you did not mention but which looks personal or important, we put it to one side and ask you about it.
Items in good condition are set aside to be donated or recycled where possible, and the rest goes to licensed facilities. When the rooms are empty, we sweep them clean and lock up as agreed, and we let you know the job is finished.
Choosing a clearance firm
Before you book anyone, check that they are listed on the Environment Agency's register of waste carriers, brokers and dealers, and ask them how they dispose of what they remove. A good firm will be happy to explain, and so are we.
Talk to us about your Richmond property
Whether it is a flat above a shop on the Market Place, a town house on Frenchgate or a farmhouse in the dale, get in touch and tell us what you need. We can usually visit to quote, or quote from photos, and we will give you an honest idea of when we can start.
